국방부의 이전으로 인해 용산의 국방부와 합동참모본부는 동일 건물내에 같이 공존하게 되었다. 과거, 합동참모본부의 의전 및 전시실로 쓰이던 본 공간은 새롭게 국방부와 합동참모본부의 의전과 전시실의 기능을 수행하게 될 공간이었다. 그러나 시대에 뒤떨어진 스타일, 무겁고 장엄한 분위기, 산만한 디자인 요소로 인해 적극적인 공간 개선이 필요했다.

본 프로젝트는 새로운 대한민국 국방부를 대표하는 공간으로써, 직진적 이미지로 국군의 올곧은 기개와 강인함을 드러내고, 날아오르는 이미지로 미래를 향해 비상하는 새로운 국군의 이미지를 표방하고자 하였다. 단순한 라인의 조합을 통해 모던한 이미지를 추구함과 동시에, 더 나아가, 강한 중심성과 대칭성, 각잡힌 요소들로 국방부의 정체성을 미래지향적 디자인으로 보여주고 있다.

본 공간에서 천장 디자인은 전체 공간을 지배한다. 입구 전시벽에서 시작한 천장의 황금빛 패널은 전면 단상쪽 벽으로 힘차게 뻗어나간다. 천장면은 중심축을 기준으로 양측으로 뻗어나가 측면 벽을 타고 내려 전시대와 만난다. 천장-벽-전시대-바닥으로 이어지는 공간의 모든 라인은 정확하게 정렬되어 하나의 통일성을 이룬다. 석재와 금속을 통한 묵직함, 우드와 패브릭의 조합을 따뜻함, 경사지붕과 조명을 통한 날렵함, 이들의 조합으로 새로운 시대 새로운 국방부의 이미지를 표현하였다.

 

Due to the relocation of the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Yongsan coexisted in the same building. The site, which was used as a protocol and exhibition room for the Joint Chiefs of Staff only in the past, was newly used as a protocol and exhibition room for the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. However, the outdated style, heavy and majestic atmosphere, and distracting design elements required active space improvement.

This project, as a space representing the new Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Korea, was intended to reveal the upright spirit and strength of the Korea Army with a straightforward image, and to advocate a new image of the Korea Armey soaring toward the future with a soaring image. It pursues a modern image through a combination of simple lines, and furthermore, shows the identity of the Ministry of National Defense in a future-oriented design with strong centrality, symmetry, and angular elements.

In this space, the ceiling design dominates the entire space. The golden panel on the ceiling, which started from the entrance design wall, extends vigorously to the wall toward the front podium. The ceiling plane extends to both sides of the central axis and descends down the side wall to meet the exhibition stand. All the lines of the space from the ceiling-wall-exhibition stand-floor are precisely aligned to form a unity. Heaviness through stone and metal, warmth through the combination of wood and fabric, and agility through the sloping roof and lighting, the combination of these expressed the image of the new Ministry of National Defense in a new era.
