서울시 교육청에서는 최근 대대적으로 각 초등학교에 방과후 수업을 위한 돌봄교실을 확충해오고 있다. 이러한 공공사업 대상의 하나로, 서울 은평구에 위치한 신도초등학교는 방학기간을 활용하여 기존교실을 돌봄교실 겸용으로 변경하고, 기존의 돌봄교실을 리모델링하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 학교 구성원(선생님들, 학부모, 학생들)과의 협의를 통해 디자인의 방향성을 정리하고, 학교 특성 및 각 사용자의 요구사항을 반영하여, 제한된 예산내에 돌봄 겸용 교실을 조성 혹은 개선하는 안을 제안하였다.

본 디자인은 기존 교실공간이 주는 딱딱함을 벗어나 아이들이 옹기종기 모여 놀 수 있는 아담한 공간들을 만들어주고자 하였다. 기능적인 부분은 모두 벽체와 일체화되어 매입되고, 아이들이 놀 수 있는 공간을 최대한 확보하고 시간에 따라 돌봄교실로 변화가능하도록 하였다. 그리고 복도 등 공용공간을 최대한 아이들을 위한 휴게공간으로 조성하였다. 기존의 돌봄교실은 둥근 형태의 수납 가구로 아이들의 활동공간을 구분해주면서 새로운 공간으로 탈바꿈하게 해주었다.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education has recently expanded ‘Dolbom Classroom(caring classes)’ for after-school classes at each elementary school. As one of these public projects, Shindo Elementary School located in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, has been trying to remodel the existing classrooms by changing the existing classrooms. To this end, we discussed the direction of design through discussions with school members (teachers, parents, students), and proposed a plan to create or improve a classroom for caring within the limited budget by reflecting the characteristics of the school and the needs of each user. .

This design aims to make small spaces soft where children can gather and play from the conventional design of the existing classroom space. All of the functional parts are integrated into the wall and secured as much as possible for the children’s play and make it possible to change to care classes over time. Public spaces such as corridors were created as rest areas for children. Existing ‘Dolbom Classroom’ has been transformed into new spaces by distinguishing children’s activity spaces with rounded storage furniture.
