남산 자락에 위치한 본 건물은 1995년 준공 당시 체육관으로 만들어진 건물이었다. 본 건물은 2007년 내부 리모델링을 거쳐 공연장, 공연 연습실, 음악 연습실 및 부대시설을 갖추고 예술 문화 공연을 지원하는 ‘남산창작센터’로 변경되어 사용되어 왔다. 그러나, 당시의 리모델링은 단순 파티션 공사로 진행되어 답답하고 밀폐된 내부공간과 비효율적인 동선과 활용도가 떨어지는 공간을 만들어 놓았다.

최근 코로나로 인해 공연 문화가 비대면화 되고 미디어의 발달로 인해 영상 컨텐츠 제작 및 온라인 미디어 시장이 급속도로 확산되면서, 영상 창작 센터의 수요가 급증하였다. 이에, 서울시는 연극 공연 연습장으로써 수명을 다한 기존의 ‘남산창작센터’를 시민들을 위한 영상 컨텐츠 제작 스튜디오 중심의 ‘남산창작센터’로 새롭게 리모델링하고자 하였다. 이와 함께, 전세계적인 기후변화에 대응하여 탄소중립을 지향하는 건축을 위해 제로에너지 리모델링을 추진하였고, 본 건물은 서울시 제1호 제로에너지 리모델링 시범사업으로 진행되었다. 본 건물은 공모를 통해 당선된 후 수차례의 설계 변경을 거쳐 2년여만에 준공되었다.

건축에 있어서 리모델링의 목표는 기존 건물이 갖고 있던 장점을 살리고 단점을 보완하는 것이다. 건물의 바뀌는 용도에 따른 기능적 요구사항을 충족시키면서, 공간적으로는 기존 건물에 대한 최소한의 개입으로 최대의 효과를 낼 수 있는 방식이 되어야 한다. 본 프로젝트는 기존 건물의 원형을 최대한 유지한 채 그 내부에 공용공간으로써 새로운 보이드 공간을 만들어 줌으로써, 전체 공간계획의 축을 잡아주고 제로에너지를 지향하는 친환경 건물로 탈바꿈하고자 하였다.

내부에는 기능적 필요에 따라 방음벽으로 밀폐된 대형 스튜디오 (VFX스튜디오 / XR스튜디오) 공간을 갖는다. 그리고, 녹음실, 편집실, 분장실, 사무실 등 부대시설들이 스튜디오 주변으로 위치하게 된다. 이러한 공간들과 남산의 자연으로 열린 기존 체육관 관람석 사이에 비어있는 공용공간이 위치한다. 전면 철거가 불가한 기존 체육관 관람석은 이동과 휴식, 미팅을 제공하는 건물의 공용공간으로 활용된다.

기존의 낡고 노후 되었던 건물은 내단열과 외단열, 태양광에너지 적용 등을 통해 에너지효율등급 및 제로에너지 인증된 친환경 건물이 되었고, 시대적 변화에 맞추어 시민들의 미디어 창작활동을 지원하는 ‘남산창작센터’가 되었다.

This building, located at the foot of Namsan Mountain in Seoul, was built as a gym when it was completed in 1995.This building has undergone internal remodeling in 2007 and has been used as the ‘Namsan Creation Center’, which is equipped with a performance hall, performance practice room, music practice room, and auxiliary facilities to support art and cultural performances. However, the remodeling at the time was carried out as a simple partition construction, creating a stuffy and closed interior space, inefficient circulation, and a space with poor utilization.

Recently, as the performance culture has become non-face-to-face due to the covid-19 pandemic and the video content production and online media market have rapidly spread due to the development of media, the demand for video creation centers has soared. Accordingly, the city of Seoul attempted to remodel the existing ‘Namsan Creation Center’, which had reached the end of its lifespan as a theater performance rehearsal space, into a ‘Namsan Creation Center’ focusing on a video content production studio for the public. In addition, in response to global climate change, zero-energy remodeling was promoted for carbon-neutral architecture, and this building was carried out as Seoul City’s first zero-energy remodeling pilot project. This building was completed in about two years after winning through a competition and going through several design changes.

The goal of remodeling in architecture is to make use of the strengths of the existing building and compensate for the weaknesses. It should be a method that can produce the maximum effect with minimal intervention in the existing building spatially while satisfying the functional requirements according to the changing use of the building. This project aims to transform into an eco-friendly building oriented towards zero energy, holding the axis of the overall spatial plan by creating a new void space as a public space inside while maintaining the original shape of the existing building as much as possible.

Inside, it has a large studio (VFX studio / XR studio) space sealed with a soundproof wall according to functional needs. In addition, auxiliary facilities such as a recording studio, an editing room, a dressing room, and an office are located around the studio. As a void space, open public space is located between the functional spaces and the bleachers of the existing gymnasium open to nature of Namsan. The existing gym bleachers, which cannot be fully demolished, are used as a public space in the building that provides circulation, rest, and meetings for the public.

Existing old and obsolete buildings have become eco-friendly buildings with energy efficiency ratings and zero energy certification through internal and external insulation and application of solar energy. ‘Namsan Creation Center’ supports citizens’ media creative activities in line with the changes of the times has become.
